Scott McClellan: unaware or just comfortable in hypocrisy?

Scott McClellan12 Aug 04 briefing

Mr. McClellan has quite a bit to say about Senator Kerry and Yucca Mountain. If I were generous, I would presume that Mr. McClellan is actually unaware of President Bush's own stances on that touchy subject. Although in Bush's case, it seems to be more a matter of out-and-out backstabbing than "flip-flops"...

Here was Bush's pre-election promise, from
Congressman Gibbons's own website:

BUSH STATEMENT ON NUCLEAR WASTE A MAJOR VICTORY FOR NEVADA

9/29/2000

RENO, NV -- Today, U.S. Congressman Jim Gibbons (R-Nev.) called Texas Governor George W. Bush’s statement on interim storage of high level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain a major victory for residents of Nevada. In a letter from Governor Bush to Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn, Bush clearly and unequivocally stated that he would veto legislation that would provide for the temporary storage of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain.
“This statement is a major victory for all Nevadans,” Gibbons announced. “Governor Bush has given Nevada residents the assurance that he would have vetoed the very legislation that the current administration vetoed earlier this year. On two separate occasions over the last year, I have had the pleasure to meet with Governor Bush personally to discuss this issue and I am pleased that he has formalized his position on this important issue.”

Traveling with George W. Bush last February in South Carolina, Gibbons discussed the importance of this issue with the Texas Governor. Gibbons further voiced his concerns over the federal government’s misguided attempt to ship and store high level nuclear waste in Nevada to George W. Bush in a May visit to Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

“Unfortunately, Nevada Democrats have been trying to distort Governor Bush’s position on this issue for months,” Gibbons continued. “The misleading schemes and sound bytes by the Democratic Party serves no benefit to the residents in Nevada. It is my belief that today’s positive statements by Governor Bush will only throw Nevada Democrats into a deeper state of panic.”

“I applaud Governor Guinn for his leadership in obtaining this statement on an issue that is important to all Nevadans,” Gibbons concluded. “This statement further demonstrates his willingness to hear our concerns here in Nevada.”
