Comparisons to 1929

David Leonhardt begins his New York Times article with this sentence:

In 1929, Meyer Mishkin owned a shop in New York that sold silk shirts to workingmen.

Doesn't anyone else find it incongruous that workingmen in 1929 would be buying enough silk shirts to support a shop?
